As a former 17 year resident of Spokane, I have seen the two sides of Chief Anne K. She puts on a “Christian” face to the public but her actions don’t support that testimony.

Powerful post. I just wrote a blog entry regarding my stepfather, a Vietnam veteran, and my dad’s girlfriend, a South Vietnamese native. She left before the fall of Saigon. My stepfather spent too much time in Vietnam. He was wounded physically. And let’s face it, they were all wounded psychically. He calls his recovery from PTSD “the huey years.” I honor them all.

Over the years of our friendship, I have often wondered about your motivation for being such a champion of the under dog and tireless advocate of the nebulous but universal philosophy I like to sarcastically call “truth, justice, and the American Way”. After reading this post, now I know why. I had no idea of your Viet Nam service. I’m so grateful that you transformed your horrific experiences into such a positive career and continue to stand up for truth. Thank you for this generous and brave comment. It makes me think of a quote from “Into the Silent Land,” the book Dr. Hoffman recommends for his workshop. In Chapter 7, “The Liturgy of Our Wounds,” on p.131, I find this: “A mature contemplative practice places us squarely before the wound of the human condition, and we learn to meet our wounds in a new way. At first this is difficult, and there is great resistance. But gradually we learn something very precious under the tutelage of these wounds. We learn a compassion for others that replaces judging, self-loathing, and the compulsion to find someone to blame… We learn that the consummation of self-esteem is self-forgetful abandonment to the Silence of God that gives birth to loving service of all who struggle.” My margin note for that quote: “Blessed is the human wound.” I bless your wound.
